Problem

Clinical studies conducted at academic institutions like Boston University, have shown a correlation between the frequent exposure to toxic ingredients found in hair care products, and the development of uterine fibroids/cancer, or the early onset of menarch in young girls, which is a risk factor for breast cancer.  The skin is the largest organ in our bodies and it absorbs over 60% of what we put on it. Toxic ingredients used in cosmetics that we apply on our skin/scalp get absorbed and can contribute to health related problems over time. With the advent of the internet and the robust availability of information, consumers are demanding more effective and healthier products for their hair and body

 

Curly hair ranges from big loose curls to tight miniature spring-like coils. Naturally curly hair tends to be more fragile than straight hair. It also tends to be dryer due to its uneven shape which is characterized by slightly lifted cuticles. This causes the hair to lose moisture while making it frizzy and vulnerable to damage. Because of it’s intrinsically dry nature and structure, curly hair is difficult to comb, manage and style. Women, desperate to manage their hair, resort to harsh grooming techniques offered in the market place like harsh chemicals, high heat & tight braids or weaves, which have known and desirable results. Unfortunately these come at a high cost to the health of their hair and scalp, causing scalp damage, breakage, thinning and eventually hair loss.

 

Mumbi Dunjwa, the founder of Naturaz, is “her” customer and knows the struggle related to caring for curly hair, how desperation to find the right products and tools exposes many women and girls to unhealthy products and practices that can damage the scalp, break hair and affect the endocrine system.  She was inspired to create Naturaz products to address these two major problems that women and girls with curly hair face in the market place.

Naturaz is on a mission to tackle this public health crisis by formulating effective and safe hair care products for women and and their families. Naturaz’s product offering ranges from cleansing, moisturizing to styling, while making more than ten claims to demonstrate its commitment to good quality, healthy hair care products.

The Naturaz product line is 100% vegan and is made with plant-based ingredients like coconut oil, aloe vera, palm fruit oil, argan oil, shea butter and more. It is formulated to address hair dryness, breakage, thinning, frizz and hair loss, that collectively affect more than 60% of women worldwide. Naturaz’s natural and organic formulas are scientifically researched and balanced to soften, strengthen and support hair growth while keeping your body healthy.

Projected impact

Naturaz is a clean beauty and environmentally conscious brand. We are seeing rising rates of diseases like cancer and female reproductive problems that can be contributed to by imbalances in the female hormone estrogen. Many products in the market are formulated with ingredients that are known to be toxic like heavy metals, endocrine disruptors (like parabens), carcinogens (like formaldehyde forming preservatives), fire retardants, developmental toxins and more. Naturaz formulates effective hair care products using safe and effective ingredients.  We focus on Natural and ogranic ingredients to create our formulas so that our products nourish the hair and scalp. By converting to Naturaz products, consumers reduce the toxins that they are exposed to which can over time contribute to disease.  

Theory of change

We can measure impact in the short and long term by:

- Reducing the number of toxins that consumers are exposed to in cosmetics.  The more consumers that we can convert to using Naturaz products, the higher the health related impact in the community.

- Educating consumers on  healthy beauty practices and how to select products that don't add to their toxic load. 

- Package our formulas in recyclable Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) which is a highly recyclable plastic resin and a form of polyester. We include a recycle graphic on our labels to encourage our clients to recycle their bottles and not contribute to pollution by sending them to a landfill. The use of recycled PET in place of virgin resin typically results in reduced energy consumption, lower costs, and reduced environmental impact.

We’ve initially focused on selling Naturaz products online to give us more control over customer data, obtain higher margins and evaluate customer purchasing behavior.  Based on this information, we have determined that to scale rapidly, we will pursue volume buys from retailers like TJX Companies, Target and others.  Both the online and retail channels complement one another, and marketing activities will support growth in both channels with the retail channel growing faster than the online channel.

The addressable textured hair care market opportunity in the United States is $12 billion and $90 billion globally. Over 60% of people in the U.S. have wavy or curly hair which nets Naturaz an addressable textured hair care market of $7 Bn. In addition to this, the clean beauty industry is a rapidly growing segment with well informed consumers demanding effective natural, organic and non-toxic products. The interest in natural ingredient-based products will be a growth leader in this segment for years to come.

We plan on acquiring market share by securing volume buys from retailers like TJX, Independent Beauty Stores, Target, Walmart, Ulta and more. We shall integrate online and retail channels to reach our customers where they shop.

Millions of women often find it difficult to comb, manage and style curly hair because it is intrinsically dry. Over 2800 respondents to a Naturaz Quiz, shared that their biggest problem is dry hair and products in the marketplace haven’t met their needs for sustained moisture.  Solutions like high heat, chemical treatments and tight braids can lead to breakage, thinning and eventually hair loss, that collectively affect more than 60% of women worldwide.

Many products in the marketplace contain estrogen disruptors and other toxins and irritants that get absorbed into the skin.  These can build up in the body and eventually cause health problems like uterine fibroids and even cancer. Additionally, consumers seeking solutions for their textured hair struggle to find product combinations that work because they are presented with a large selection of products that they must guess through and that don’t work in synergy.

Having experienced some of these problems and observed them in general, Mumbi Dunjwa, the Founder & CEO of Naturaz, started investigating materials that were not only clean, but effective in delivering and sustaining moisture in hair.  She is an award-winning chemist from the American Chemical Society who formulated Naturaz hair care products. She has a Masters degree from Carnegie Mellon University, a Bachelors degree in Chemistry and 11 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry. 

She created Naturaz Inc. which is a clean health and beauty company that formulates, manufactures and sells 100% vegan hair care products for curly hair.  This product line simplifies haircare by offering a Moisture System for tight curls & coils and another for wavy & loose curls.  Naturaz products have no sulfates, parabens, formaldehyde forming preservatives, drying alcohols, phthalates, silicones, dyes or other harmful ingredients.

Mumbi’s vision is to make Naturaz products available to as many people that need them.  Staying true to her passion to integrate health and beauty, she is building a premium brand to be made available for the masses.  The company is now scaling its sales revenues through entry into retail while continuing to build the online business.  Naturaz recently secured a deal with TJX companies to supply over 4000 products to 150 stores in the US and Canada.  The company also has a strong pipeline of retailers and distributors who have overtly expressed interest in the brand.  The team at Naturaz is excited about its progress and anticipates rapid growth through 2024.

How to request access to a diligence process underway

Investor users can see, where peer investors allow, when a diligence process is underway or completed. When this is the case, users may contact the organization who leads the diligence process directly, or specifically request access to the diligence process underway in the event that those leading may be keen to include prospective coinvestors or collaborators. This ‘request’ functionality is visible only to investors.

Third parties or other user types may be invited directly to a diligence process by a lead investor by clicking on the “Invite” button on the Diligence tab. Once they accept, these users will have access to the diligence process including a shared Q&A area, a document repository, and a diligence-specific chat area.

What does closing diligence mean

Closing diligence means that an appraisal process led by a prospective investor of an organization seeking debt, grant or equity has been terminated. This may or may not mean that a diligence has effectively been completed; an investor may close said process at any time without further notification of next steps. This effectively closes the Diligence ‘table’ that has been opened and managed by a lead prospective investor. This also closes the process for any other investors or invitees to the ‘diligence table’, regardless of where they have been in the process.

How do I customize templates

In order to customize templates, a Master Administrator can go to the Diligence menu item on the left hand menu of the dashboard, and select ‘templates’. From there, one can either select an existing template from the dropdown under “Select template” or create a new one by clicking on the green “Create” button. All sub-questions in any template may be edited or deleted at any time.

What if I don’t want to use these templates

One does not have to use system templates if they are not helpful, applicable, or practical for user purposes. Simply upload whatever documents you’d like to ‘hold’ on the system and use the messaging tab to communicate with those at the virtual diligence table.

How can I control who sees my templates

Anyone who is invited into the diligence deal room for prospective co-investment alongside your own would be able to see the substance and structure of the templates you have constructed and applied to the diligence Q&A process on the Q&A tab. If you have not applied one of your templates, then others at the deal table will not be able to see it.

It is also worth noting that other team members that you have specified as part of your organization’s team will also be able to see the diligence templates that you have customized, if any.

How do I signal investment commitment

The platform is designed to be as flexible as possible in terms of process. As soon as an investor initiates diligence by clicking on the “Start diligence” button, it is possible from that point onwards at any moment to signal an investment commitment of any kind by clicking on the “Make investment” button at the top right of the Diligence tab. Investments can take the following forms: equity, debt, flexible, grant, equity/debt, equity/grant, convertible or blended - and the investor will be prompted to enter an indicative amount. It’s important to note that this is for signalling purposes only, and is a non-binding commitment.

Any figure entered here will be signaled as committed on the deal profile, and those inside the diligence deal room with the investor will see that he/she has signaled such a commitment; at the same time, a notification will be sent to the prospective recipient organization being reviewed. All binding legal commitments and money transfers happen offline and on the back of completion of proper documentation, for which the platform takes no responsibility. Investors contacts connected to you will not see that you have made this commitment.

How do I invite other people to the 'deal table'

Once Diligence has been initiated by an investor, one can click on the Diligence tab under Opportunity and immediately expand the virtual ‘deal table’ by clicking on “Invite organization”. One can search for different types of organization or by name, and will be required to consent to specific ‘terms of service’ related to sharing knowledge about an opportunity.
